ISLAMABAD: In response to recent media speculation, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication clarified on Sunday that there have been no directives issued to abolish the ministry or any of its associated departments. The ministry categorically described the reports circulating in certain sections of the media as “distorted and fabricated.”
The clarification follows erroneous interpretations suggesting the potential abolition of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and other related departments. According to the ministry, the ‘Committee on the Right Sizing of the Federal Government has indeed sought recommendations from respective ministries to streamline and optimize attached departments. However, there is no directive to dismantle or abolish any ministries as reported.
Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for immediate action to address inefficiencies within governmental structures. He ordered the closure of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD), citing prolonged poor performance and allegations of corruption. The Pak PWD, responsible for federally funded infrastructure projects and government land development, was singled out for its perceived burden on national resources.
In a national address on June 15, Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated his administration’s commitment to austerity measures, including the closure of institutions deemed ineffective or financially draining. He announced the formation of a ministerial committee tasked with identifying further cost-saving measures, emphasizing the forthcoming benefits of such actions for the nation.
“I have decided that closure of institutions that have become a burden on the nation instead of providing help was necessary,” Prime Minister Shehbaz stated, underscoring his government’s resolve to streamline expenditures and redirect savings towards priority areas.
Looking ahead, the government anticipates presenting a comprehensive plan within the next two to three months aimed at further optimizing governmental operations and fiscal responsibilities. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed confidence that these measures will mark a significant step towards financial prudence and effective governance.
