govt announced its decision regarding social media ban during Muharram

The federal government has declined requests from provincial governments to block social media applications during Muharram, according to sources.

This decision ensures that platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp will remain accessible throughout the period.

Provincial authorities had sought the closure of six major social media apps from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram as a security precaution. However, federal authorities opted against this measure, instead focusing on alternative security arrangements.

Emphasizing robust security measures, the federal government has pledged enhanced protocols and heightened vigilance in areas hosting Muharram processions and gatherings.

The Interior Ministry has issued directives to bolster security efforts, including deploying personnel and temporarily suspending mobile signals in specific procession and majalis venues to prevent any potential incidents.

By maintaining the availability of social media platforms, the government aims to balance public safety with the necessity for communication and information dissemination.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has already announced consecutive public holidays on Muharram 9 and 10 to commemorate Ashura. The specific dates of these holidays hinge on the sighting of the Muharram moon by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

If sighted on July 6, Muharram 1 will commence on July 7, with Ashura observed on July 15 and 16, corresponding to Monday and Tuesday. In this scenario, public holidays will also be observed on July 15 and 16.

Alternatively, if the new Islamic year begins on July 8, Ashura will fall on July 16 and 17, resulting in public holidays on July 16 and 17, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
