JI declares protests regarding water and power problems in Karachi

Jamaat-e-Islami announced plans on Wednesday to hold demonstrations at more than 100 locations throughout Karachi this coming Friday, driven by grievances over the city’s critical water crisis and persistent electricity shortages.

Munim Zafar Khan, the Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi, delivered the announcement, decrying what he described as rampant corruption within the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB). He pointed fingers at the board during a sit-in organized in front of the central office of the Shahra-e-Faisal Water Corporation. Khan accused the KWSB of fostering a culture of corruption, allegedly involving members of the MQM party.

The decision to protest was motivated by frustration with the provincial government’s allocation of funds, which Khan claimed favored projects like the circular railway and renovations to the Chief Minister’s House over essential services.

Khan highlighted ongoing severe electricity load shedding affecting large swathes of the city, emphasizing the community’s dissatisfaction with K Electric’s operational deficiencies. He cautioned that protests would escalate unless the power utility promptly addressed the concerns raised by Karachi’s residents.

The Jamaat-e-Islami leader asserted that the current sit-in would evolve into a broader city-wide protest if K Electric did not swiftly rectify its policies and operational practices.

The demonstrations planned for Friday are set to encompass diverse locations across Karachi, aiming to amplify public outcry over the enduring water and power crises gripping the city.
