Pakistan responds to US Congress resolution on Feb 8 elections

The Foreign Office has expressed concerns regarding a recently approved resolution by the US House of Representatives, which questions the fairness of Pakistan’s February 8 elections.

The resolution, passed by a significant majority, calls for a thorough and independent investigation into the electoral process.

Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated that Pakistan has noted the resolution’s approval by the US House of Representatives on June 25. She emphasized that the timing and context of the resolution do not align with the current state of bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States.

Baloch remarked that the resolution demonstrates an incomplete understanding of Pakistan’s political situation and electoral process. She pointed out that Pakistan is the second-largest parliamentary democracy in the world and the fifth largest overall. “Pakistan is committed to its national interests, adhering to its constitution, human rights, and legal values,” she added.

Baloch highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to constructive dialogue based on mutual respect and understanding, noting that resolutions like the one passed by the US Congress are not constructive and do not serve any practical purpose. She expressed hope that the US Congress would play a supportive role in strengthening Pakistan-US relations.

“We expect that Congress will focus on mutual cooperation in the interest of both countries and their people,” Baloch stated, emphasizing the importance of constructive engagement to enhance bilateral ties.
