Govt approves intensified national counter-terrorism campaign named Operation Azm-i-Istehkam

On Saturday, the federal government sanctioned Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, a revitalized national counter-terrorism initiative aimed at decisively eliminating extremism and terrorism across Pakistan.

This strategic move, endorsed during a Central Apex Committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, underscores a unified commitment involving all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Azm-i-Istehkam integrates multiple lines of effort to comprehensively combat extremism and terrorism, as articulated by the Prime Minister’s Office. It marks a significant step forward in the implementation of the 20-point National Action Plan (NAP), originally crafted in response to the tragic 2014 terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar.

Recent years have seen an increase in terrorist activities, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the cessation of a ceasefire by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan in November 2022.

According to a report from the Centre for Research and Security Studies, Pakistan witnessed a notable escalation in violence-related incidents in 2023, emphasizing the urgency of robust counter-terrorism measures.

During the committee meeting, attended by key officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and others, a comprehensive review of ongoing efforts highlighted the critical importance of strengthening national security. The forum reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to combating extremism and terrorism, emphasizing that this endeavor is pivotal for the nation’s stability and prosperity.

PM Shehbaz Sharif underscored the necessity of a holistic approach involving all government entities, not solely relying on military efforts but also encompassing law enforcement, socio-economic measures, and diplomatic engagements.

He stressed the collective responsibility of all institutions and provinces in ensuring the success of Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, emphasizing that a united front is essential to safeguarding Pakistan’s future against the scourge of terrorism.

The premier also emphasized the role of political and religious leadership in fostering a national consensus, highlighting the need for sustained efforts beyond kinetic actions. He called for enhanced public awareness, countering extremist narratives, and strengthening law enforcement capabilities to effectively address the multifaceted challenges posed by terrorism.

Operation Azm-i-Istehkam represents a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s ongoing struggle against terrorism, reflecting a renewed determination to secure the nation and promote lasting peace and stability.
