Pakistan, Turkey and Indonesia have jointly urged for unified efforts to address the escalating issue of Islamophobia

Amidst the surge in anti-Muslim sentiments, senior diplomats from Pakistan, Turkey, and Indonesia reiterated their governments’ shared commitment to combating Islamophobia while promoting peace, tolerance, and inter-religious dialogue.

Speaking at an event hosted by the consulates general of these three countries in New York, Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai of Pakistan emphasized Islam’s fundamental values of moderation, pluralism, compassion, and tolerance. He highlighted the distortion of Islam by a minority of extremists and the alarming rise of Islamophobia post-9/11, encompassing hate speech, violence, and institutional discrimination against Muslims.

Atozai also highlighted Pakistan’s active participation, along with Turkey and Indonesia, in the recent adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution on combating Islamophobia, which includes a call for the appointment of a UN Special Envoy for this purpose.

He condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza as reflective of global Islamophobia and highlighted incidents worldwide, including hate speech, targeted attacks, and discrimination against Muslims.

Additionally, Atozai drew attention to the destruction of religious sites in India and other Islamophobic actions within the country, including the military presence in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and discriminatory policies aimed at altering the region’s demographic composition.

Following the opening remarks, a panel discussion ensued, featuring distinguished speakers who delved into various aspects and dimensions of Islamophobia. Associate Prof. Dr. Enes Bayrakli from Turkey examined the nature and origins of Islamophobia, while Dr. Imam Shams Ali from Indonesia explored the factors contributing to it and proposed strategies for its mitigation.

Raza Ahmad Rumi, a Pakistani journalist, highlighted the perilous manifestations of Islamophobia, particularly in India, emphasizing the urgent need for effective countermeasures. The speakers emphasized the pivotal role of international cooperation and community engagement in addressing Islamophobia.

The consuls general reiterated their governments’ commitment to fostering mutual respect and understanding among diverse communities, underscoring their dedication to ongoing collaborative efforts in this endeavor.
