Yasmin Rashid Returns to Kot Lakhpat Jail Amid Controversy Over Early Discharge

Yasmin Rashid

Yasmin Rashid, the Punjab President of PTI, was discharged from Lahore’s Services Hospital amidst controversy surrounding alleged pressure from a senior police officer.

Rashid had been admitted to the hospital after falling ill in Kot Lakhpat Jail, reportedly due to inadequate medical attention.

Her imprisonment stems from her involvement in the events of May 9, 2023, which led to widespread protests and riots following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Rashid was initially detained under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance on May 12, 2023, and rearrested the following day in connection with the May 9 riots.

Rashid’s lawyer, Rana Mudassar, asserted that Rashid’s family and legal counsel were barred from visiting her in the hospital.

Mudassar criticized the conditions of Rashid’s hospital stay, describing her accommodation as uncomfortable and the bed as broken, exacerbating her back pain.

Despite doctors recommending an extended hospital stay for further investigation and treatment, Rashid was discharged prematurely.

Mudassar alleged that a journalist’s unauthorized visit prompted a strong reaction from the deputy inspector general operations, who allegedly pressured the doctors to discharge Rashid immediately.

Mudassar expressed concern over Rashid’s well-being, emphasizing the importance of adequate medical care.

He lamented the denial of Rashid’s basic rights and raised apprehensions about her returning to jail under similar conditions, which could endanger her health.

It’s worth noting that Rashid is on judicial remand, making the Kot Lakhpat Jail administration responsible for her custody, not the police.

The decision to transfer Rashid back to prison was reportedly made after she was deemed to have recovered.

The circumstances surrounding Rashid’s discharge and return to jail have sparked criticism and raised questions about the treatment of prisoners and the influence of external pressures on medical decisions.
