Supreme Court Warns TV Channels Against Airing Defamatory Content, Threatens Contempt Charges

The Supreme Court has delivered a written verdict in the contempt of court case involving Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal, finding both individuals retrospectively guilty of contempt.

Last Friday, the court issued contempt of court notices to Senator Faisal Vawda and MNA Mustafa Kamal for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the judiciary. A three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and including Justice Irfan Saadat and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, initiated a suo motu case following Vawda’s press conference on May 15, where he criticized judges for alleged interference in judicial matters.

The Supreme Court postponed the contempt of court suo motu hearing until June 5.

In its ruling issued on Saturday, the Supreme Court mentioned that show-cause notices were served to both Vawda and Kamal, allowing them an opportunity to clarify their actions. The notices require them to provide explanations regarding the contempt charges.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court issued a strong warning to television channels, directing them to halt the broadcast or re-broadcast of any defamatory content. The court stated that channels airing such content would also face contempt charges.

The court’s order underscores the importance of upholding respect for judicial proceedings and the integrity of the legal system.
