Nawaz Sharif Calls PML-N Central Working Committee Meeting to Select Interim President

ISLAMABAD: According to reports, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif has convened a crucial meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) on May 18.

Sources privy to the matter reveal that the CWC session will primarily focus on the selection of an interim president for the party, a position left vacant after the resignation of Shehbaz Sharif.

The impending CEC gathering is anticipated to feature addresses by both former Prime Minister Nawaz and the incumbent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Significantly, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tendered his resignation as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Monday, triggering the need for a succession plan within the party’s hierarchy.

Rana Sanaullah, speaking at a recent press briefing, disclosed that the PML-N Punjab chapter has earnestly urged Nawaz Sharif to reassume the mantle of party leadership, citing his seasoned guidance as indispensable for navigating the party through its current challenges.

During the recent PML-N Punjab meeting, a unanimous resolution was passed, formally requesting Nawaz Sharif to once again shoulder the responsibilities of party leadership in this testing period.

It is imperative to recall that Nawaz Sharif faced disqualification from holding any public office subsequent to his conviction in 2018. However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) overturned his convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references on November 29 and December 12 of the previous year, respectively. Following his exoneration, Nawaz Sharif contested the General Elections of 2024 and emerged victorious from the NA-130 Lahore constituency, reinstating his political clout within the party and beyond.
