A 99-year-old British woman has made history by completing a daring wing-walking stunt, earning recognition as the oldest person to achieve the feat. Helga Duffy marked her birthday milestone with the extraordinary challenge, demonstrating her determination to pursue an ambition that many might consider too risky at her age.
Duffy decided to attempt the record after learning about former record-holder Betty Bromage, who completed a wing-walking stunt at 97. Inspired by Bromage’s achievement, she set out to claim the title herself.
Helga Duffy Completes Record-Breaking Stunt
Duffy originally planned to perform the stunt on September 23, her birthday. However, the attempt was postponed until October 16, when she finally completed the challenge.
A representative of Guinness World Records confirmed her achievement and presented her with a certificate recognising the record. Consequently, Duffy earned a place in the record books for wing walking at the age of 99.
Wing walking involves a person standing or moving on the wings of an aircraft during flight. The activity requires careful planning and specialised safety arrangements, making Duffy’s achievement an unusual milestone.
Beyond setting a record, her attempt also supported a charitable cause. The event raised donations for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance, turning her personal challenge into a fundraising effort.
Former Record-Holder Betty Bromage Wants Her Title Back
Duffy’s achievement has also sparked a playful response from Bromage, the previous record-holder. Bromage congratulated her successor but suggested that she might attempt to reclaim the title.
“I can’t wait to be 100 so I can do it again and take my record back,” she said.
Her response leaves open the possibility of another attempt when she reaches her centenary. Therefore, the unusual record could become the subject of a friendly contest between the two women.
An Extraordinary Achievement at 99
Duffy’s wing-walking feat has attracted attention because of both her age and the adventurous nature of the challenge. Rather than limiting her plans to a conventional birthday celebration, she pursued an ambitious goal and supported an emergency medical charity.
Meanwhile, Bromage’s determination to return at 100 adds another chapter to the story. Their achievements highlight how personal ambition can inspire remarkable challenges, even later in life, while leaving the door open for another record-breaking attempt.
