Defying Age and Health, Belfast Woman Breaks Record at Ormeau Park
In an extraordinary display of determination and resilience, 97-year-old Grace Chambers from Northern Ireland has officially become Europe’s oldest park runner, completing her 250th 5K run at Ormeau Park in South Belfast on Saturday.
Despite undergoing heart surgery just four weeks ago, Grace showed no signs of slowing down as she joined fellow participants for the popular community event. Her milestone not only sets a record but also redefines the limits of age and fitness.
After the run, Chambers shared her joy and gratitude for being able to continue doing what she loves.
“I was glad I did it because there was a chance I might not have been able to,” she said.
“But I never look at things negatively—if I can’t do it the first time, I’ll try again and again.”
A Lifelong Passion for Fitness Inspires Generations
Chambers, who has always prioritized physical activity, has now become an inspirational figure for runners across Europe. Her dedication to weekly park runs—free 5,000-meter events held in communities across the UK and beyond—demonstrates the power of consistent movement, community engagement, and a positive mindset.
Her 250th race was met with resounding applause from fellow runners and supporters, many of whom described her as a beacon of perseverance and healthy aging.
As the oldest person in Europe to achieve such a feat, Chambers continues to inspire people of all ages to stay active and never give up on their passions—regardless of age or health challenges.
