ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said the ongoing monsoon spell has taken 77 lives, with 39 deaths reported in Balochistan alone.
She has termed the deaths a “national tragedy” and also said that hundreds of homes have been destroyed during heavy rains. Minister further stated that rescue operations in remote areas were being hampered due to heavy rains.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, Sherry Rehman added that the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has prepared a national monsoon contingency plan. She, however, also urged the people to stay alert to prevent further damage.

“We need a comprehensive plan to avert these deaths and devastation as all of this destruction is taking place due to climate change,” she added.
The rains will continue till July 8 and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also warned of water logging in low-lying areas.
Although it did not rain heavily in Karachi till almost the end of Wednesday afternoon, the metropolis is expected to receive 40-50mm of rain under the influence of a strong weather system that has developed over the sea.
