LAHORE: Authorities have launched a province-wide crackdown against individuals accused of spreading chaos and misinformation on social media platforms.
Police confirmed that 39 suspects were arrested overnight during coordinated operations across multiple cities in Punjab.
Coordinated Raids Across Major Cities
According to police officials, the operations were conducted in Lahore, Kasur, Kamoke, Gujranwala, and Sheikhupura.
The raids targeted individuals allegedly involved in spreading provocative or false content on Facebook, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp.
Out of the total arrests, 39 were made in Lahore, while others were detained in surrounding districts during simultaneous operations.
Dozens of Social Media Accounts Traced
Police revealed that the social media accounts of 87 more suspects have been traced and identified.
These accounts were reportedly used to circulate misleading narratives and incite public unrest.
Officials said the crackdown aims to curb digital misinformation campaigns that threaten public peace and security.
List of Suspects and Legal Proceedings
A comprehensive list of over 200 individuals suspected of involvement in such activities has been compiled.
Police confirmed that legal proceedings will begin once the arrest and verification process is complete.
Authorities warned that strict action will be taken against anyone using social media to spread panic or disorder.
Broader Operation Beyond Muridke
Sources said the crackdown was launched after state agencies mobilised against misinformation campaigns linked to recent protests in Muridke.
The operation is expected to expand to multiple cities with more raids planned nationwide.
Over 200 arrests are anticipated during the ongoing nationwide crackdown.
Surveillance and Monitoring Intensified
Officials said monitoring cells are now tracking fake accounts and tracing the origin of false news in real time.
Security agencies are working round the clock to prevent attempts to incite unrest or violence.
Police confirmed that multiple raids may take place tonight, with simultaneous arrests expected across urban centres.
