WANA/ISLAMABAD: At least two people were killed and 14 others injured in a remote-controlled bomb blast targeting a police van in the Rustam Bazar area of Wana, located in Lower South Waziristan, on Thursday, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Imran Ullah.
Among the injured are two police officials, the DSP confirmed, adding that an emergency has been declared at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Wana to handle the influx of casualties.
Wave of Violence Across Pakistan
The attack follows a series of deadly incidents across Pakistan in recent days:
- Just a day earlier, three Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel were martyred when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in Garagri, Karak district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
- On Wednesday, a Pakistan Army major and two soldiers were martyred in an IED attack in Mastung district, Balochistan, carried out by India-backed terrorists, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The military identified the fallen soldiers as:
- Major Muhammad Rizwan Tahir
- Naik Ibni Amin
- Lance Naik Muhammad Younas
The ISPR said the attack was carried out by members of “Fitna al-Hindustan,” an Indian proxy militant group.
Rising Security Concerns in KP and Balochistan
These recent attacks underscore a resurgence in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan—two provinces bordering Afghanistan, which remain highly vulnerable to cross-border terrorism.
While Pakistan saw a slight decline in terrorist activity in June, according to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), the overall security landscape remains tense.
PICSS reported:
- 78 militant attacks across the country in June
- 100 fatalities, including:
- 53 security personnel
- 39 civilians
- 6 militants
- 2 members of local peace committees
- 189 people injured, including:
- 126 security personnel
- 63 civilians
As militant threats persist, security forces remain on high alert across multiple regions.
