Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that no resolution to the war can be reached without Kyiv’s direct involvement, calling on Turkey to play a role in future negotiations.
During a joint press conference in Ankara on Tuesday, Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized the recent US-Russia talks in Riyadh for excluding Ukraine, Turkey, and European nations. Zelenskyy stressed that any decision on the conflict’s resolution must involve all key stakeholders.
Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s strong support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, offering Ankara as a venue for future negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. Aligning with past diplomatic efforts, he stated that Turkey remains committed to facilitating discussions that lead to lasting peace.
“This war, which has caused immense suffering and destruction, must end,” Erdogan declared, vowing that Turkey would provide all necessary support to ensure a meaningful diplomatic process. He emphasized that peace benefits all parties and that the world is eager for a resolution.
Zelenskyy Condemns Riyadh Talks, Cancels Saudi Visit
Expressing frustration over the US-Russia meeting in Riyadh, Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine had not been informed in advance, learning about it only through media reports.
“It was a surprise to us,” he said, arguing that such negotiations would be ineffective without Ukraine’s participation. In response, he canceled a planned visit to Saudi Arabia and announced that he is awaiting a US delegation in Kyiv to discuss the situation.
Turkey’s Role as a Mediator
Erdogan positioned Turkey as a key mediator, reiterating that Ankara will continue its diplomatic efforts through Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I hope our efforts will pave the way for peace,” Erdogan stated, reaffirming Turkey’s stance on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He underscored the need for an inclusive diplomatic process where all relevant parties are engaged.
As the war continues to inflict devastation, both leaders signaled a renewed push for diplomacy. With Turkey offering itself as a neutral platform for negotiations, its role in shaping future peace efforts remains significant.
