Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged United States President Donald Trump to help end the ongoing war in Ukraine, drawing parallels to the peace efforts undertaken in the Middle East.
According to a statement issued by Kyiv, Zelensky made the appeal during a telephone conversation with President Trump, in which he also congratulated him on the successful implementation of the Gaza ceasefire.
During the call, President Zelensky discussed the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and highlighted the need for advanced long-range missile systems to counter continued Russian aggression.
He briefed President Trump on the latest Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure and expressed gratitude for Washington’s consistent support since the start of the conflict.
Zelensky said both leaders reached “specific agreements” aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defence and resilience. He urged Trump to leverage his diplomatic experience in brokering peace in the Middle East to bring a similar resolution to the war in Ukraine.
“Russia must be ready for diplomacy, and that will only happen through strength,” Zelensky emphasized, underscoring the importance of strong military backing alongside peace negotiations.
The two presidents have shown a notable improvement in relations since their tense televised meeting in February at the White House. They also held a brief exchange on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, signaling renewed engagement between Washington and Kyiv.
The call marks a potential shift toward a more cooperative tone between the two leaders, with Zelensky expressing optimism that Trump’s approach to diplomacy could open a new chapter for peace in Eastern Europe.
