WASHINGTON, D.C. โ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has announced plans to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following Trumpโs recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which ended without any concrete progress toward resolving the war in Ukraine.
Zelenskiy confirmed the meeting in a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that he had a โlong and substantiveโ phone call with Trumpโlasting over 90 minutesโafter the summit. According to the White House, Trump also spoke with NATO and European leaders during his return flight to Washington in the early hours of Saturday morning.
While both Trump and Putin described their one-on-one meeting as โproductive,โ no agreement was reached to halt or resolve Russiaโs ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Trilateral Talks Proposed, European Leaders Briefed
During their call, Zelenskiy expressed Ukraineโs support for Trumpโs proposal to hold a trilateral summit involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia. He stated that discussions on ending the war should be held at the highest level and that this format would allow for key issues to be addressed directly.
โOn Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war,โ Zelenskiy stated.
According to Axios journalist Barak Ravid, who cited an unnamed source, Trump informed Zelenskiy and European leaders during the call that Putin was not interested in a ceasefire but was seeking a comprehensive peace agreement. Trump reportedly said, โI think a fast peace deal is better than a ceasefire,โ though Reuters has not independently verified the report.
Trump also briefed major U.S. allies on the outcomes of his summit with Putin. Leaders on the call included NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and top officials from Germany, Britain, Poland, Finland, and Italy.
