ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has criticized reports suggesting that Pakistani players could face a Rs5 million fine each following the teamโs disappointing performance in the ICC Menโs T20 World Cup. The reports indicate that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering financial penalties after the national side failed to deliver a strong performance in the tournament.
Pakistanโs T20 World Cup journey ended on Saturday when the team failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Consequently, the poor performance triggered discussions within the PCB about stricter accountability measures for players.
Younis Khan calls the fine unfair
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Younis Khan said imposing such a heavy fine would be unfair. He emphasized that players should raise their voices if authorities enforce the proposed penalty.
Moreover, the former captain pointed out that Pakistanโs domestic cricket system has a large pool of talented players waiting for opportunities. He highlighted batter Sahibzada Farhan as an example, stating that consistent performances in domestic competitions should encourage emerging players to push for national selection.
Younis also recalled a similar incident from the past. He explained that during the ICC Cricket World Cup, when Rashid Latif led Pakistan, officials informed players that their allowances and match fees would be reduced. However, the squad united and opposed the decision, ultimately forcing authorities to reconsider.
Calls for opportunities and modern approach
Furthermore, Younis stressed that modern cricket requires a balanced approach from players. According to him, batting in T20 cricket is not limited to hitting boundaries and sixes.
Instead, players must build innings, rotate the strike, and bat through the full 20 overs when necessary. He added that global cricket has evolved significantly, and teams must adapt their strategies accordingly.
Meanwhile, sources suggest that the PCB has clearly informed players that financial incentives will now depend strictly on performance. In addition, the board is reportedly considering changes to the squad, including the possibility of dropping key players such as Babar Azam from the T20 setup as part of a broader overhaul.
