Nintendo has unveiled a brand-new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a surprise Nintendo Direct this weekend, giving fans their first proper look at Yoshi โ along with several other beloved characters making their big-screen debut.
The short presentation was hosted by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, who wasted no time diving into new footage. The trailer opens with an extended sequence of Mario and Luigi motorbiking through a desert, expanding on a moment teased in the previous trailer. Their destination will be instantly recognizable to Super Mario Odyssey fans: the inverted pyramid in the Sand Kingdom.
The brothers are tasked with unblocking a rogue Warp Pipe, and after powering up with Fire Flowers, they descend underground. As the classic Mario underground theme plays, the pair reach the clogged pipe โ only to discover something moving inside.
That โsomethingโ turns out to be Yoshi.
Yoshi Gets His Big Reveal โ and He Talks
Instead of the dangerous enemy Mario and Luigi expect, Yoshi is revealed as a small, frightened dino who slowly warms up to the brothers. Later shots in the trailer confirm what fans hoped for: Yoshi quickly becomes part of the team.
While his appearance was widely anticipated โ thanks to the cracking Yoshi egg teased in the post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie โ this marks the characterโs first full reveal. The trailer also offers a glimpse of Yoshiโs voice, with the character mumbling short phrases and calling out his name in classic fashion.
Bowserโs Castle, Frog Suits, and Cheep Cheeps
The trailer rolls into a rapid-fire montage featuring Mario and Princess Peach infiltrating a lava-filled fortress, clearly inspired by Bowserโs Castle levels. In another moment, a Toad is swallowed by a massive Cheep Cheep, only to be rescued by Luigi wearing the Frog Suit Power-Up, a fan-favorite callback.
Birdo, Mouser, and Lakitu Join the Chaos
One of the biggest surprises comes with the introduction of Birdo, seen angrily firing eggs at Peach. The princess blocks the attack using her parasol, and for a split second, fans catch a glimpse of Mouser โ a deep-cut villain from Super Mario Bros. 2.
The pairing of Birdo and Mouser is no accident, as both characters originate from Super Mario Bros. 2, set in the dream world of Subcon. The scene raises questions about whether Peach embarks on her own side quest while Mario and Luigi explore the Sand Kingdom.
Another quick shot confirms Lakituโs big-screen debut, as the cloud-riding menace hurls projectiles at Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi from above.
Baby Mario, Baby Luigiโฆ and a T-Rex?
The trailerโs final moments take a bizarre turn. Yoshi is shown clutching a weapon resembling the SNES Super Scope, while Toad holds Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. The group appears to be facing off against a T-Rex-like creature, reminiscent of enemies from Super Mario Odyssey.
Confs
The Nintendo Direct wrapped up with a brief retrospective on Yoshiโs history across Nintendo games, followed by an update from Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination. Meledandri confirmed that animation on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now complete, with the film officially in post-production.
Music production is still underway, with iconic themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games being re-recorded using a 70-piece orchestra, promising a cinematic soundtrack worthy of the franchise.
