Xi Calls for Stronger Regional Security Cooperation
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China will work with all members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to elevate the forum’s role in global security. Addressing over 20 world leaders at a two-day summit in Tianjin, Xi highlighted the SCO as a model of new international relations that firmly rejects external interference. His remarks underscored ambitions for reshaping the global security framework in ways that challenge U.S. influence.
Leaders Show Solidarity at Tianjin Summit
The summit brought together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and leaders from Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Their participation marked a major show of solidarity within the Global South, as the SCO has grown from six Eurasian nations to 10 permanent members and 16 dialogue and observer states.
Xi Promotes Multilateralism Over Hegemony
In his address, Xi emphasized constructive participation in world affairs while opposing hegemonism, power politics, and unilateral pressure. He positioned the SCO as a platform to advance multilateralism and collaborative security in an increasingly divided world. His statements reflected China’s broader push to counterbalance U.S.-led alliances through alternative international structures.
Putin Criticizes Western Sanctions
Ahead of the summit, Putin voiced strong criticism of Western sanctions in an interview with China’s state news agency Xinhua. He argued that Moscow and Beijing share opposition to discriminatory trade restrictions imposed by the West. However, Russia’s economy continues to struggle under the weight of sanctions and the financial toll of its war efforts, raising questions about the sustainability of its role in this emerging order.
