A sizable group of ancient artefacts has returned to Pakistan from Italy. The items belong to the prehistoric Kuli and Naal cultures of Balochistan. They date back nearly 5,000 years. Officials confirmed the latest shipment arrived from Rome on October 30, 2025. Meanwhile, a separate consignment came back from Milan earlier this year.
Decades of Recovery and Bilateral Cooperation
Nearly 100 culturally important objects have been recovered over the past 18 years. Therefore, the return represents years of sustained legal and diplomatic work. Italy and Pakistan cooperated closely to locate and secure the items. Consequently, authorities were able to repatriate artefacts taken unlawfully long ago. The embassy described the outcome as a strong example of friendly state cooperation.
Cultural Significance and Archaeological Ties
The recovered pieces illuminate ancient life in Balochistan. Thus, they add depth to Pakistan’s prehistoric record. Pakistan prides itself on being a cradle of ancient civilisations. Sites such as Mehrgarh, Kuli, and Naal are central to that legacy. Furthermore, Pakistan and Italy share a long history of archaeological collaboration.
Italian Mission and Academic Contributions
The Italian Archaeological Mission in Swat began work in 1955. Over time, it produced nearly 1,500 academic publications. Consequently, Italian scholars have played a major role in Pakistani archaeology. Notably, two Italian academics received national honours for their research contributions. Those awards recognised decades of fieldwork and scholarly exchange.
Restoration, Preservation, and Next Steps
Returned artefacts will undergo conservation and museum cataloguing. Then, they will be handed to Pakistan’s cultural authorities for safekeeping. Officials stressed a shared commitment to protecting world heritage. Moreover, both countries reiterated their intent to strengthen cultural ties. Such cooperation supports archaeological research and public education.
What This Means for Heritage Protection
Repatriation boosts public awareness of cultural looting and trafficking. Also, it shows that long legal and diplomatic efforts can succeed. Therefore, nations can work together to restore stolen heritage items. Finally, the return of these objects renews focus on preserving Pakistan’s past.
