WhatsApp has launched a suite of new safety features aimed at helping users identify and avoid scams, as part of a broader effort to combat misuse on its platform. The update comes alongside the companyโs disclosure that it recently took action against over 6.8 million accounts linked to scams.
New Protections for Group Chats
To strengthen defenses in group settings, WhatsApp is introducing a safety overview screen when users are added to unfamiliar groups by someone outside their contact list. The feature will provide helpful contextโsuch as whether the person who added you is in your contacts, and how many group members are known to you.

Additionally, notifications will remain muted until the user decides to stay in the group, limiting immediate exposure to potentially harmful messages.
One-on-One Scam Defenses
Recognizing that scammers often approach victims on other platforms before moving to private chats like WhatsApp, the company is testing new warning alerts when users receive messages from numbers not saved in their contacts. These alerts will include information about the sender and security tips to help users assess legitimacy before replying.
Collaborative Crackdown with OpenAI
In a notable example of tech collaboration, WhatsApp revealed it worked with OpenAI to dismantle a Cambodia-based scam network that was using ChatGPT to craft initial scam messages.
Victims were lured from WhatsApp to Telegram, where they were assigned fake tasksโsuch as liking TikTok videos or joining cryptocurrency schemes. To build trust, scammers shared faked earnings screenshots, eventually convincing victims to deposit real money into crypto wallets.
WhatsApp cited this case to highlight the increasing sophistication and multi-platform nature of modern scams.
WhatsAppโs Safety Tips for Users
To help users protect themselves, WhatsApp advises:
- Pause before replying to unknown messages
- Question offers, especially those involving money
- Verify identities of friends or family through other channels
- Be cautious of urgency, a common tactic used by scammers
Investing in a Safer Platform
The company emphasized its commitment to user safety, noting continued investment in AI-driven detection tools, easy-to-use reporting features, and global partnerships to fight fraud and spam.
With scams becoming more complex, WhatsApp says its mission is clear:
โTo make it harder for bad actors to misuse the platform while keeping users informed and empowered.โ
