Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on several older iPhone models, as part of the platform’s periodic review of supported operating systems. The Meta-owned messaging giant announced that it will end compatibility with iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1, impacting a number of users still reliant on outdated Apple devices.
Among the models set to lose access to WhatsApp are the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus — all of which have been classified as “obsolete” by Apple. These devices no longer receive iOS updates or hardware servicing, making them increasingly incompatible with modern app requirements. The company emphasized that the shift is driven primarily by the need to enhance user security, ensure app performance, and support newer features that outdated devices cannot accommodate.
In a statement posted to its updated FAQ section, WhatsApp clarified its rationale:
“We regularly review the operating systems we support and make necessary changes. Devices that do not receive the latest security updates or lack modern technical capabilities may be excluded to safeguard the overall user experience.”
This policy revision affects both regular users and those using WhatsApp Business, which is widely adopted by small and medium-sized enterprises. Business users relying on older iPhones will also need to upgrade their devices or risk losing access to important communications and customer engagement tools.
Currently, iPhone 8 and iPhone X are the oldest iPhone models that remain eligible to run WhatsApp, though they too may face future limitations, as Apple has ceased major iOS upgrades for them following the release of iOS 16.
From a security perspective, WhatsApp explained that ending support for outdated operating systems allows it to implement advanced privacy tools, such as chat locks, disappearing messages, encrypted backups, and message-copy prevention—features that older devices may not be equipped to handle effectively.
Tech analysts say this move is consistent with a broader industry trend that favours innovation and cybersecurity over continued support for legacy systems. Other major tech platforms like Google, Microsoft, and Apple themselves have similarly phased out support for older operating systems to reduce vulnerabilities and streamline development.
What should users do?
WhatsApp recommends that users check their device’s iOS version and, if necessary, upgrade to a newer model to ensure uninterrupted access. Users who do not transition in time risk losing access not only to WhatsApp’s messaging services but also to the data stored within the app—including chat histories, media, and files.
For many, this announcement serves as a wake-up call to stay updated—not just for access, but for enhanced digital safety in an era of rapidly evolving cyber threats.
