The Meta-owned messaging application WhatsApp is reportedly working on adding animated avatars for video calls, a feature that is reminiscent of Apple’s Memoji. Rumors about this development surfaced last year.
According to WABetaInfo, an independent portal that provides real-time updates about WhatsApp, the messenger app has introduced the capability to make video calls using animated avatars in the latest beta version for Android, labeled as 2.23.19.14.

WhatsApp is notifying its users about this new feature through a pop-up banner, giving them the choice to “use your avatar during calls.” Users can opt to “Switch to avatar” or select “Not now.”
To use the new video call avatar, users can choose the “Switch to avatar” option. This feature will replicate their facial movements and expressions in real time using an avatar character.
Users also have the option to turn off this feature at any time from the settings if they prefer not to use avatars. Importantly, this new avatar feature will not disable end-to-end encryption, ensuring that user privacy and security remain intact. WhatsApp may use some data to enhance the Avatar experience on the app.
Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly working on avatars for status updates, although there is no information available regarding when this feature will be released.
