Washington โ Leaders of five Western nations on Monday urged Israel to avoid launching a large-scale ground operation in Lebanon, warning of severe humanitarian and security consequences. In a joint statement, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom expressed deep concern over intensifying violence and rising instability in the region.
Escalation raises humanitarian and regional concerns
The leaders cautioned that any significant Israeli ground offensive would likely trigger devastating humanitarian fallout and risk prolonging the conflict. Moreover, they highlighted the worsening situation inside Lebanon, where ongoing displacement and civilian suffering have already reached alarming levels.
Earlier in the day, Israelโs military confirmed it had begun what it described as โlimitedโ ground operations targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. However, Western leaders signaled that even limited incursions could quickly escalate into a broader confrontation if not carefully contained.
Call for diplomacy and political resolution
At the same time, the joint statement emphasized the urgent need for diplomatic engagement. The leaders called on Israeli and Lebanese representatives to pursue meaningful dialogue aimed at achieving a sustainable political solution. They stressed that only negotiationsโnot military escalationโcan prevent further deterioration.
Furthermore, the statement condemned Hezbollahโs decision to align with Iran in ongoing hostilities. It also demanded an immediate halt to attacks on Israel and civilians, urging Hezbollah to disarm.
In addition, the leaders reaffirmed their support for Lebanonโs government and people, stating they have been unwillingly drawn into the conflict. While tensions continue to rise, Western governments signaled that preventing a wider war remains a top priority.
