The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has successfully restored water supply to several parts of the city after completing repair work on a damaged 48-inch water pipeline at the K-II pumping station. The repair, which began earlier this week, temporarily disrupted supply to multiple residential and commercial areas across Karachi.
According to a KWSC spokesperson, repair teams worked continuously for nearly two days to replace the damaged valve and reconnect the critical section of the pipeline. The work required shutting down three of eleven pumps at the North East Pumping Station and one at the Dhabeji Pumping Station to ensure safe maintenance operations.
Several Karachi Localities Affected During Maintenance
During the repair period, water supply remained disrupted in parts of Safoora Town, North Nazimabad, Gulberg, and adjoining neighborhoods. Some areas of Liaquatabad and Gulshan-e-Iqbal also experienced reduced pressure or complete suspension of service.
The KWSC explained that the temporary shutdown caused an overall shortfall of around 150 million gallons per day (MGD) from the city’s total 650 MGD supply. However, the remaining 500 MGD continued to flow through alternate routes to minimize the impact on residents.
The corporation’s technical teams completed the task ahead of schedule despite challenging working conditions. Once the replacement valve was installed and tested, pumping operations resumed gradually to avoid system pressure fluctuations that could damage other lines.
KWSC Assures Stable Water Pressure and Ongoing Monitoring
KWSC authorities assured citizens that water pressure would stabilize across affected areas within the next 24 hours. Monitoring teams have been stationed at major pumping stations to oversee system recovery and ensure consistent water flow.
In a statement, the spokesperson said the corporation was “fully committed to maintaining uninterrupted water supply across Karachi” and urged citizens to use water responsibly during the recovery phase.
The official added that preventive inspections are being planned for other high-capacity pipelines to avoid similar disruptions in the future.
Karachi’s Persistent Water Challenges
Karachi continues to face growing water management challenges, including aging infrastructure and uneven distribution across residential zones. Experts believe that continuous pipeline monitoring, timely maintenance, and the introduction of modern leak detection systems are essential to ensure reliable delivery for the city’s over 20 million residents.
The recent restoration effort highlights KWSC’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the water network while addressing the city’s chronic supply shortfalls.
Residents of affected localities expressed relief following the restoration announcement, while officials assured that full supply pressure will return to normal levels shortly.
