Former Cricketer’s Image Misused in Espionage Case
A case of mistaken identity triggered outrage after Indian authorities arrested a man named Wasim Akram on espionage charges, prompting several media outlets and social-media users to mistakenly publish the photo of Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler and former captain, Wasim Akram.
According to a report by Free Press General, the ex-cricketer condemned television channels and online users for circulating his image without any verification.
Wasim Akram Urges Media to Verify Before Reporting
In a video statement later shared online, the 59-year-old former cricketer criticized the reckless dissemination of false information. He urged journalists and social-media users to double-check facts before posting or broadcasting unverified material.
He emphasized that while he rarely gives unsolicited advice, people should confirm identities first to avoid putting someone’s life at risk.
Arrest of YouTuber Sparks Controversy
The controversy began on October 2 when Indian authorities arrested a YouTuber—also named Wasim Akram—in Haryana on allegations of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Police claimed the suspect had been in contact with Pakistani agents for nearly three years and allegedly helped them by supplying SIM cards. The report said the arrest quickly gained attention, leading to the former cricketer’s photo being mistakenly circulated as that of the accused spy.
Former Captain Calls for Responsible Journalism
Reacting to the confusion, Wasim Akram shared links to his verified social-media accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and X (Twitter) to help confirm his true identity. He urged the media to act responsibly and avoid careless reporting that can harm reputations and spread misinformation.
Pattern of Bizarre Misidentifications
The report also cited previous incidents in India where authorities mistakenly accused non-human or harmless objects of espionage. These included the seizure of balloons bearing Pakistani flags in occupied Kashmir and the detention of a pigeon alleged to be a Pakistani “spy.” Both episodes sparked ridicule and drew attention to sensationalism in Indian media coverage.
