KARACHI: An exciting video recording of a vehicle which fell into a huge sinkhole in Tariq Road is gaining popularity among users on various online platforms.
The event took place on Friday evening in the commercially busy Tariq Road. As per eyewitness accounts, the driver was driving normally when the road gave away, causing the accident.
The front part of the vehicle fell into the sinkhole, resulting in the car taking an angular position. Fortunately, the driver escaped without any injuries to himself, while the vehicle itself suffered serious damage.
Local residents and passersby quickly gathered at the scene. Some people helped pull the driver out while others recorded the moment on their phones. The video spread rapidly online, with many people expressing shock at how quickly the road collapsed.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) team arrived at the scene immediately after the event. They informed that the sinkhole may have formed due to the damage to underground sewage pipes, which collapsed owing to heavy rainfall recently.
The process of filling the sinkhole and repairing the road is currently under way. The traffic was diverted in the surrounding areas for some time until the work was done.
It is not the first time that there has been a sinkhole on the streets of Karachi. Sinkholes frequently form in the city owing to poor maintenance of underground facilities and heavy rainfalls.
