Gohar Ejaz appointed as caretaker interior minister

ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar appointed Caretaker Commerce Minister Gohar Ejaz to take on the additional responsibility of the interior ministry. This decision follows the resignation of Sarfraz Bugti from the post last month.

The official announcement of Ejaz’s appointment came from the cabinet division and was effective immediately upon approval by Caretaker PM Kakar. Sarfraz Bugti, who resigned on December 13, 2023, officially joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and expressed his intent to contest in the upcoming 2024 elections from Dera Bugti in Balochistan. His decision to join the PPP was influenced by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who directed him during a visit to Turbat.

Minister

Bugti, speaking at a PPP workers’ convention in Turbat on December 18, emphasized his commitment to defeating nationalistic politics and restoring peace in Balochistan under the leadership of Asif Ali Zardari. He expressed hope for improved healthcare facilities in Turbat and urged Zardari to establish a state-of-the-art hospital in the region.

Bugti, formerly affiliated with the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), had initially been speculated to contest the elections on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket. However, his unexpected move to join the PPP has shifted the political dynamics, positioning him as a key player in the party’s progressive agenda under Zardari’s leadership.

In his address, Bugti pledged to contribute to making the PPP a force for positive change, challenging narratives against Pakistan. With the elections on the horizon, Bugti’s switch to the PPP adds intrigue to the political scenario, marking a significant development in his electoral aspirations.
