Coffee, Energy Drinks, and Nicotine Fueled Troops
During Operation Epic Fury against Iran, the U.S. military consumed massive quantities of stimulants to maintain alertness and performance, according to Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine.
In a briefing on Wednesday, April 8, Caine disclosed that American forces relied on nearly 1 million gallons of coffee, 2 million energy drinks, and โa lot of nicotineโ during the conflict. He emphasized that these supplies were essential to sustain troops under intense operational conditions but clarified, โI am not saying that we have a problem.โ
The coffee alone is equivalent to roughly 7.6 million cups, highlighting the scale of caffeine consumption in a high-tempo military campaign. Energy drinks and nicotine were also critical for maintaining stamina and alertness among soldiers operating in the Gulf region.
Scope of the Operation and Military Achievements
Gen. Caine reported that U.S. forces, alongside Gulf allies, attacked over 13,000 sites in Iran during the operation. Several Iranian missiles and drones were shot down, showcasing the intensity and strategic scope of the campaign.
The general also noted that over 6 million meals were consumed by the troops over the course of the operation. Despite the extreme demands, Caine expressed gratitude to soldiers for their performance in gritty and unforgiving circumstances.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth added that the Pentagon has completed its immediate objectives, but U.S. forces would remain in the region to monitor and enforce the fragile ceasefire.
Casualties and Ceasefire Context
The Trump-Iran ceasefire was established after five weeks of conflict, which resulted in the deaths of 13 American soldiers and more than 1,600 Iranians. The briefings aimed to provide insight into both the operational challenges and the resources that sustained military personnel throughout the campaign.
While Caine detailed coffee and energy drink consumption, he did not mention specific brands. The exact quantity of nicotine consumed by troops was also withheld, highlighting the classified nature of some operational details.
The revelations underscore the logistical scale and physical demands of modern military operations. They also illustrate the ways in which military planners rely on stimulants and nutrition to keep personnel combat-ready during extended, high-intensity missions.
