US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll arrived in Abu Dhabi on Monday for talks aimed at advancing a possible peace deal. The Financial Times reported that he met Ukrainian and Russian officials to explore options to end the war.
The report cited a US official and two people with knowledge of the meeting.
It said Driscoll and Russian representatives opened discussions on Monday night.
Those discussions were scheduled to continue on Tuesday.
Driscoll was also expected to meet Kyrylo Budanov, who heads Ukraine’s military intelligence agency.
Budanov leads the Main Intelligence Directorate within Ukraine’s Defence Ministry.
Meeting Follows Progress in Geneva
The talks in Abu Dhabi followed notable progress made during weekend discussions in Geneva.
Ukrainian and US officials held intensive talks there on key elements of a draft peace plan.
The Financial Times said Driscoll has played an active role in recent diplomatic efforts.
A US official told the outlet that Driscoll has been heavily involved in the peace process.
The official said his recent engagement allows him to convey detailed positions to Moscow.
Format of the Talks Remains Unclear
It remains unclear whether the three sides met jointly in Abu Dhabi.
The report said they may have held separate meetings instead of a single trilateral session.
No further details on the structure or outcome of the meetings were immediately available.
