In a rare move, U.S. lawmakers have introduced legislation that would authorize President Donald Trump to equip Israel with B-2 stealth bombers and 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs if Iran moves to develop a nuclear weapon.
The proposed Bunker Buster Act, co-sponsored by Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey and Republican Congressman Mike Lawler of New York, is designed to bolster Israel’s ability to target Iran’s underground nuclear facilities and enhance U.S. national security.
“Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terror and responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans,” Gottheimer posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. “As Iran rebuilds its nuclear program, we must maintain maximum deterrence.”
The bill would grant President Trump the authority to ensure Israel is fully prepared for any contingency involving Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
This legislative move follows a series of recent escalations. On June 22, the U.S. dropped six bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility and launched dozens of submarine-launched cruise missiles targeting other nuclear sites in Natanz and Isfahan. These strikes were part of a broader campaign aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
The U.S. and Iran had been scheduled to hold a sixth round of nuclear talks on June 15, but those negotiations were disrupted after Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian targets on June 13.
The 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect on June 24. According to the Pentagon, the strikes have set back Iran’s nuclear program by an estimated one to two years.
