WASHINGTON: US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has dismissed Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, forcing his immediate retirement effective Thursday, in the latest reshuffle of top Pentagon leadership during ongoing military operations involving Iran.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the development, thanking George for his service but citing the need for “new leadership during the conflict.” George, the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, had served in the role since August 2023.
According to officials, Hegseth personally called George to request his retirement, stating it was time for a leadership change as the administration aligns military command with the wartime strategy of President Donald Trump. Notably, the decision comes nearly five weeks into joint US-Israeli operations against Iran.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that tensions had been building between George and senior leadership. His push for rapid procurement of low-cost drones and attritable systems, influenced by lessons from the Ukraine conflict, reportedly conflicted with Hegseth’s modernization priorities.
