The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday endorsed four annual Pakistani resolutions focused on disarmament and international security, underscoring Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to promoting regional and global peace.
The resolutions were recommended by the Assembly’s First Committee, which deals with Disarmament and International Security, and received wide support from the 193-member body.
Two of the resolutions, titled “Regional Disarmament” and “Confidence-Building Measures in the Regional and Sub-Regional Contexts,” were adopted unanimously at both the committee and General Assembly levels. These measures highlight the importance of fostering trust and reducing tensions among neighboring states, reflecting Pakistan’s long-standing advocacy for regional stability.
The other two resolutions, “Conclusion of Effective International Arrangements to Assure Non-Nuclear-Weapon States Against the Use or Threat of Use of Nuclear Weapons” and “Conventional Arms Control at the Regional and Subregional Levels,” were approved by overwhelming majorities.
The resolution on assurances to non-nuclear states passed with 20 votes in favor, none against, and 60 abstentions, while the conventional arms control text received 179 votes in favor, one against (India), and two abstentions (Israel and Zimbabwe).
For decades, Pakistan has consistently promoted issues such as nuclear disarmament, regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs). The adoption of these resolutions at the UNGA reinforces the international community’s recognition of the importance of “negative security assurances” and the value of regional approaches to disarmament and arms control.
These resolutions also highlight Pakistan’s proactive role in fostering multilateral dialogue on security issues and reaffirm its commitment to achieving peaceful coexistence through structured international and regional cooperation.
By championing these initiatives, Pakistan aims to strengthen global norms around arms control and disarmament, contributing to a safer and more secure world for all nations. The UNGA’s endorsement signals broad international support for Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in advancing these critical security and peace objectives.
