A damning UN report, highlighted by a UK-based daily, exposes the harrowing ill-treatment suffered by Palestinians in Israeli detention centers. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) discloses instances of brutal beatings, dog attacks, and sexual assaults in an internal report, as reported by The Guardian.
This information was gleaned through interviews with recently released Palestinian detainees at the Kerem Shalom crossing during UNRWA’s humanitarian support operations.
Despite the release of 1,002 detainees, which included children, women, and UNRWA staff, in December, the report reveals a grim realityโover 4,000 people have been detained since the commencement of the conflict on October 7.
The catalyst for this distressing situation was Israel’s deadly offensive on Gaza, initiated in response to a cross-border incursion by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
The ensuing Israeli bombardment has exacted a staggering toll, claiming the lives of at least 30,631 individuals and injuring 72,043 others. The consequences include mass destruction and critical shortages of necessities.
The repercussions of the Israeli war are staggering: 85 percent of Gaza’s population is now internally displaced, grappling with acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.
Furthermore, 60 percent of the enclave’s infrastructure lies in ruins, according to the UN’s dire assessment of the situation. This ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.
