UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives caused by devastating flash floods in Pakistan, assuring that the United Nations is prepared to extend support if requested.
“The Secretary-General offers his sincere condolences to the victims’ families and stands in solidarity with those affected by this disaster,” read a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric. “We stand ready to assist should it be requested.”
In Pakistan, the death toll has risen to 657, with at least 323 fatalities reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province alone after two days of relentless rains.
Guterres’ message comes two years after his 2022 visit to Pakistan, when he assessed the catastrophic floods that devastated Sindh and Balochistan.
On the same day, Pope Leo XIV also offered prayers for those affected by the widespread flooding across Pakistan, India, and Nepal. He conveyed his closeness to the suffering communities, praying for the victims, their families, and all those enduring hardships as a result of the disaster.
Pakistan Army sets up a field hospital for flood victims
On the special directives of Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army has launched a relief and rescue operation in Tero, a remote and flood-affected village in Phander tehsil of Gilgit-Baltistan. The operation aims to address the urgent medical and humanitarian needs of residents who have been left stranded after floodwaters cut off road access to the area.
A field hospital has been set up in the village, manned by a specialist medical team that includes a paediatrician, gynaecologist, medical specialist, and a general duty medical officer. These experts are currently providing round-the-clock healthcare services to the local population. The lack of medical facilities had raised serious concerns about the health and well-being of residents, prompting the army’s swift intervention.
The medical team has already treated a large number of patients, dispensed necessary medicines, and committed to staying in the area for as long as needed. Four critically injured individuals were evacuated by army helicopters to nearby hospitals for immediate and specialized medical attention.
