Strategic Energy and Defence Partnership
Ukraine has secured vital fuel supplies through long-term agreements with several Gulf nations, strengthening its position amid the ongoing war with Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine reached deals with countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine signed these agreements in March. Some of them span up to ten years. Under the arrangements, Ukraine will receive crude oil in certain cases and refined fuels such as diesel in others. These supplies are expected to provide a stable energy lifeline for the country as it continues to face wartime challenges.
Anti-Drone Support Shapes the Deal
The agreements stem from Ukraine’s growing reputation in countering Iranian-made Shahed drones. These drones have played a major role in modern conflicts due to their low cost and effectiveness. Ukraine has developed practical and affordable interception methods during its war with Russia.
When Gulf states faced increasing threats from similar drone attacks, Ukraine stepped in with technical expertise. Kyiv deployed more than 200 personnel from its anti-drone units to assist regional partners. These teams helped improve defensive systems and provided operational support against aerial threats.
This cooperation created a mutually beneficial arrangement. Gulf countries gained access to tested defence solutions, while Ukraine secured much-needed fuel resources to sustain its infrastructure and military operations.
Regional Tensions and Broader Implications
The background to these agreements includes heightened tensions involving Iran. Iranian drone and missile activity in the region increased following retaliatory strikes linked to US-Israeli operations. These developments exposed vulnerabilities in regional defence systems and pushed Gulf nations to seek reliable countermeasures.
Ukraine’s involvement reflects a shift in its international role. It is no longer only a recipient of aid but also a provider of military expertise. The undisclosed financial terms of the agreements suggest sensitive negotiations, but the strategic impact remains clear.
