British counter-terrorism authorities have charged three men over a series of targeted attacks on Pakistani dissidents in the UK. The incidents involved supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan. Investigators described the assaults as deliberate and carefully planned.
The attacks occurred in Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire between December 24 and December 31. Due to the nature of the incidents, counter-terrorism police assumed control from local authorities. Officials said the victims were specifically identified and targeted.
Former Cabinet Adviser Among the Victims
One of the victims was Mirza Shahzad Akbar, a former accountability adviser in Imran Khan’s cabinet. He was attacked at his residence after the assailant confirmed his identity. According to his account, the attacker punched him repeatedly.
Following the assault, Akbar went into hiding. He cited serious concerns for his personal safety and that of his family. The incident raised alarm among Pakistani political figures living in exile.
Three British Nationals Face Serious Charges
Police confirmed that three British nationals have now been formally charged. Karl Blackbird, aged 40, and Clark McAulay, aged 39, were charged with conspiracy to cause actual bodily harm. Each charge relates to separate incidents.
A third suspect, Doneto Brammer, aged 21, was charged over the attack on Akbar’s home. He also faces charges for possessing a prohibited weapon. Additionally, authorities charged him with conspiracy to commit arson.
All three suspects appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. The court proceedings marked a significant step in the investigation.
Wider Arrests as Investigation Expands
Meanwhile, police carried out coordinated raids across London, the Midlands, and Essex. Several other suspects were arrested during these operations. However, authorities later released them on bail.
Investigators stated that the inquiry remains active. Detectives are exploring all possible motives behind the attacks. They are also examining potential links between the separate incidents.
Authorities Keep Motive Under Review
Police stressed that they are keeping an open mind. They have not ruled out political motivation or coordinated planning. Officials said public safety remains a priority as inquiries continue.
The case has drawn attention to the security risks faced by political dissidents abroad. It has also raised concerns within overseas Pakistani communities.
