Who attacked the Akrotiri Royal Air Force base in Cyprus, as the UK Ministry of Defence said a drone that targeted the Akrotiri Royal Air Force base in Cyprus on Monday did not originate from Iran?
The UK Ministry of Defence has shared a message on the social media _ X platform, saying the drone was not launched from Iran. Then who attacked the airbase? This question has become a hot topic globally, soon after the UK’s Defence Ministry issued the statement.
The base, located southwest of the coastal city of Limassol, is one of two sovereign military areas the United Kingdom has retained in Cyprus. Officials moved quickly to clarify the droneโs origin amid heightened regional tensions linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
In a statement posted on X, the ministry confirmed that it had reinforced air defence systems at British and allied installations across the region. The deployment includes UK-built air defence missiles aimed at strengthening protection against potential aerial threats.
Military Reinforcements and Precautionary Steps
Furthermore, the ministry announced that Royal Navy helicopters equipped with missiles will arrive in Cyprus in the coming days to bolster security. The additional assets form part of a broader effort to safeguard British personnel and facilities.
Separately, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said the British embassy in Manama had temporarily withdrawn some staff members and their dependents as a precautionary measure. However, officials did not specify how many individuals had left the site.
Embassy Operations Continue
Despite the temporary drawdown, the embassy in Bahrain will continue operating, authorities confirmed in a social media update. Officials emphasised that these steps reflect routine contingency planning during periods of heightened risk.
The UK Defence Ministry, nevertheless, did not reveal further details, but said the UK government will protect its military and diplomatic personnel in the region amid US-Israel attacks on Iran and subsequent retaliations.
