UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Israel to immediately reconsider its security cabinet’s decision to intensify military operations in Gaza. Calling the move “wrong,” he warned that escalating the offensive would only fuel further violence, deepen the humanitarian crisis, and diminish the chances of peace.
Starmer stressed that military escalation will not help end the conflict or secure the release of hostages. “This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed,” he said.
Humanitarian Concerns and Hostage Situation
The Prime Minister highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where civilians face severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities. He condemned the conditions in which hostages taken by Hamas are being held, describing them as “appalling and inhuman.”
Starmer reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire and a surge in humanitarian aid. “What we need is a ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas, and a negotiated solution,” he stated. He emphasized that Hamas must play no role in Gaza’s future governance, calling for the group to leave the territory and disarm completely.
Path Towards Peace
According to Starmer, lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through diplomacy and a genuine willingness to negotiate from both sides. He revealed that the UK, alongside its allies, is working on a long-term plan to foster peace as part of a two-state solution—one that ensures security for Israel while granting Palestinians their legitimate rights and a viable future.
He warned that without sincere engagement in peace talks, the hope for resolution will continue to fade. “Without both sides engaging in good faith negotiation, the prospect of peace is diminishing,” Starmer cautioned.
Call for Diplomatic Action
The Prime Minister concluded by urging both Israel and Palestinian representatives to step back from “the path of destruction” and instead focus on building a future based on coexistence, mutual recognition, and respect for human rights. “Our message is clear: a diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction,” he said.
Starmer’s remarks underscore a growing international push for de-escalation, humanitarian relief, and a return to peace negotiations in the Israel-Palestine conflict. His stance reflects increasing concern that continued military action risks entrenching divisions, prolonging human suffering, and destabilizing the wider region.
