Three British lawmakers of Pakistani origin have come under scrutiny after attending promotional events for a Dubai property project linked to Malik Riaz Hussain and his son Ali Riaz Malik, according to an investigation by The Sunday Times.
The report said Labour MPs Naz Shah and Afzal Khan, along with independent MP Ayoub Khan, spoke at roadshows in June 2024 promoting the โWaadaโ development in Dubai. The project spans 14 million square feet and includes luxury residences, a hotel, and a replica Eiffel Tower.
During the events, the developers addressed audiences virtually, highlighting their vision and experience. Malik Riaz, founder of Bahria Town, and his son have faced legal scrutiny in both the United Kingdom and Pakistan. In 2019, they agreed to a ยฃ190 million settlement with the National Crime Agency following an unexplained wealth investigation. Authorities later repatriated the funds to Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the case became politically sensitive after it was linked to allegations against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who denies wrongdoing and maintains the charges are politically motivated.
In addition, the UK Court of Appeal upheld a 2021 decision barring Malik Riaz and his son from entering the UK, citing concerns over their conduct.
Despite these controversies, the MPs attended multiple promotional events. However, all three later distanced themselves from the project. Ayoub Khan said he had no prior knowledge of allegations and requested the removal of his name from promotional materials. Similarly, Naz Shahโs office described her attendance as routine community engagement, while Afzal Khan said he attended briefly without endorsing the venture.
The report has raised questions about political oversight and due diligence in such engagements.
