British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom will allow the United States to use its military bases for specific and limited defensive purposes as tensions rise with Iran.
In a statement on Sunday, Starmer confirmed that Washington requested permission to access British facilities to counter Iranian missile threats across the Gulf region. He said London accepted the request to prevent attacks that could kill civilians, endanger British nationals, and target uninvolved countries. Moreover, he stressed that the decision aligns with collective self-defence obligations and longstanding alliances.
However, Starmer clarified that the UK would not take part in direct strikes on Iran. He said the government deliberately chose restraint because it believes diplomacy offers the most sustainable path forward. According to him, a negotiated settlement remains the best solution for regional stability and global security.
Defensive action
Separately, the British government published its legal reasoning, emphasising that the move falls within defensive parameters. Starmer said neutralising missiles at their source โ including storage sites and launch platforms โ remains the only effective way to reduce the threat.
Earlier, the UK joined France and Germany in a joint statement signalling readiness to protect their interests and allies through defensive action if required. Meanwhile, Starmer highlighted the safety of British nationals in the region, estimating that at least 200,000 citizens could be affected.
He urged Britons in Gulf states to register with authorities and follow travel guidance. Officials advised those in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to shelter in place as risks persist.
