Two policemen were martyred and two others injured in a shocking attack on a police station in western Türkiye’s Izmir province on Monday. Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the assault.
Attack on Balcova Police Station
The teenager, identified by initials as E.B., opened fire with a rifle on the Salih İsgoren police station in Balcova district. The sudden assault rattled local residents and immediately triggered a strong response from security forces.
Interior Minister Condemns the Attack
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya condemned the “heinous” act in a statement posted on X. He confirmed that two policemen embraced martyrdom while serving their duty. He further stated that one officer suffered serious injuries, while another sustained minor wounds. Both injured officers were shifted to Dokuz Eylul University Research and Application Hospital for urgent treatment. Yerlikaya also announced that the suspect was arrested and that a detailed investigation had been launched.
Judicial Inquiry Initiated
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc also commented on the incident through X. He revealed that the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had immediately opened a judicial inquiry. Additionally, two deputy chief prosecutors and six public prosecutors were assigned to handle the case. Tunc strongly condemned the attack and vowed justice.
Security Measures and Local Reaction
Following the shooting, security forces swiftly cordoned off the area around the police station. Media reports indicated that police spread across Balcova to ensure safety and prevent any further disturbances.
Izmir Mayor Cemil Tugay also issued a strong condemnation. In his post on X, he described the incident as a “treacherous attack” and expressed deep condolences to the families of the martyrs. Tugay also praised the courage of police officers who stood their ground despite the sudden assault.
