Tragic Crash in Clifton Leaves Multiple Casualties
KARACHI: A devastating accident occurred late Saturday night near the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton, when a speeding car ran over people sleeping on a footpath, killing two and injuring four others, police and rescue officials confirmed.
According to initial reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle at high speed and struck a group of people resting along the roadside. The collision also involved a motorcyclist, who was killed instantly in the impact. The deceased were identified as Kareem and Shabbir, while the injured included Mudassir, Shakeel, Ahad, and Tahir.
Rescue teams quickly reached the scene and shifted the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. The accident caused panic among passersby and devotees visiting the shrine, a popular spiritual site in the area.
Driver Arrested; Police Probe Underway
Police officials stated that the car driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Both the driver and a companion traveling with him sustained injuries and were taken into custody from the hospital after receiving medical attention. Authorities said preliminary evidence suggests reckless driving and alcohol consumption were key factors behind the tragic incident.
Law enforcement officers have launched a formal investigation into the case, collecting CCTV footage from nearby shops and the shrineโs vicinity to determine the exact sequence of events.
A police spokesperson condemned the reckless act, emphasizing the grave dangers of drunk driving, which continues to claim innocent lives across Karachi. Officials assured that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible.
The tragic crash has once again raised concerns about road safety and enforcement of traffic laws, particularly around crowded areas like Clifton and other parts of Karachi, where pedestrians often sleep along pavements due to lack of shelter.
