Turkiye has finalized a $10 billion agreement to export 48 domestically produced Kaan fighter jets to Indonesia, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday.
The deal will see the jets manufactured by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and delivered over the next ten years. Erdogan emphasized the strategic partnership with Indonesia, describing it as a “friendly and brotherly” nation.
According to the terms of the agreement, the Kaan fighter jets will be built in Turkiye, with technology transfer provisions allowing Indonesia to contribute to the production process. Local Indonesian capabilities are expected to be utilized in the assembly and manufacturing phases.
The Kaan, a fifth-generation fighter jet, made its maiden flight in February 2024. Initially outfitted with engines similar to those used in the F-16, future versions are expected to incorporate engines developed within Turkiye.
This agreement marks a significant boost for Turkiye’s growing defense sector, which has gained international recognition with products like the Bayraktar drones. In 2024, Turkiye’s defense exports totaled $7.1 billion, a rise of $1.6 billion from the previous year.
