Suella Braverman, the interior minister for the United Kingdom (UK), resigned from her position on Wednesday, casting further doubt on Prime Minister Liz Truss’ ability to survive after her right-wing economic agenda failed.
Suella Braverman claimed she resigned after sending a work colleague a formal email through her personal account.
She stated in her resignation letter that it was a “technical infraction” of government regulations and added, “I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I quit.”
Within a few hours, Liz Truss’ office made the announcement that Grant Shapps, a former transport minister under the late Premier Boris Johnson, would take her position. Shapps committed to pursuing “the kind of security that the British people need.”
He acknowledged that the Truss administration had “a very tough moment,” but said that incoming finance minister Jeremy Hunt had “done a terrific job” of resolving the problems with the short budget.
After making her finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng take the fall for a terrible budget, Truss has come under fire for refusing to resign herself.
Bond yields shot up following the government’s mini-budget of September 23, which reduced a number of taxes without reducing spending, as investors feared that the UK’s debt would skyrocket.
Suella Braverman expressed “severe reservations” in her resignation letter over the prime minister’s broken campaign commitments.
“Pretending we haven’t done anything wrong, acting as if nobody can see we’ve done it, and hoping everything will magically come right,” she wrote.
As home secretary for only 43 days, Braverman’s resignation is the most recent crisis brought on by the government’s budget.
