US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is considering potential military action against Iran as mass anti-government protests intensify across the country. He said his administration is reviewing the situation and evaluating options.
Moreover, Trump said Iranโs leadership has reached out to negotiate following his threats of military action. He claimed that Iranian leaders called to request talks and that officials are arranging a meeting. However, he also warned that the United States may need to act before any meeting takes place. As a result, the White House has increased the urgency of its internal deliberations.
White House consults advisers on next steps
A US official said Trump will meet senior advisers on Tuesday to discuss policy options regarding Iran. Reports indicate that options include military strikes, cyber operations, and expanded economic sanctions. Consequently, officials are preparing scenarios to give the president flexibility.
At the same time, Iranian officials have responded forcefully. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned Washington against what he described as a miscalculation. He stated that any attack on Iran would make Israel and all US bases and ships legitimate targets.
Iran calls for rallies as unrest toll rises
Iranโs government declared three days of national mourning for security personnel killed during weeks of unrest. State television reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian urged citizens to join rallies to condemn the violence. Nevertheless, protests have continued to grow despite an internet blackout lasting more than 72 hours.
A US-based rights group, HRANA, reported that 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have died, while authorities have arrested more than 10,600 people.
