US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a two-week suspension of military attacks on Iran, describing the move as a โdouble-sided ceasefireโ aimed at advancing peace efforts in the region.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir. He added that the pause in hostilities depends on Iran agreeing to the โcomplete, immediate, and safe openingโ of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Moreover, Trump stated that Washington had already โmet and exceeded all military objectives.โ He expressed confidence that both sides were close to reaching a long-term agreement for peace in the Middle East. According to him, a two-week window would allow negotiations to be finalized.
Meanwhile, Abbas Araghchi signaled Tehranโs conditional acceptance of the arrangement. He said Iran would halt its defensive operations if attacks against the country stopped. Furthermore, he noted that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz could be ensured for two weeks in coordination with Iranian armed forces.
In addition, Araghchi thanked Pakistanโs leadership for facilitating diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. This highlights Islamabadโs growing role as a mediator between the two sides.
According to Reuters, negotiations between the United States and Iran are expected to begin in Islamabad on April 10. The report also cited White House officials as saying that Israel supports the temporary ceasefire.
Furthermore, Trump revealed that Washington has received a 10-point proposal from Iran and considers it a workable basis for negotiations. He added that most longstanding issues have already been addressed, although further discussions are needed to finalize the agreement.
The announcement followed intense last-minute diplomacy, as Pakistan urged restraint to prevent a major escalation in the conflict.
