US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed being “a little bit disappointed” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He noted Zelenskyy has not yet engaged with the latest US plan to end the war in Ukraine.
Ongoing Peace Plan Developments
The US peace proposal has undergone multiple drafts since first emerging last month. It aims to bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Critics have argued that the plan may be too lenient toward Russia.
Trump stated that discussions have taken place with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leaders, including Zelenskyy. “As of a few hours ago, President Zelenskyy has not yet read the proposal,” Trump said during remarks at the Kennedy Center Honors red carpet event.
Recent Negotiations Between US and Ukraine
US and Ukrainian officials held several days of discussions that concluded on Saturday without a clear breakthrough. Despite the lack of resolution, Zelenskyy committed to continuing talks aimed at achieving “real peace.”
Zelenskyy described recent interactions with American representatives as “substantive,” following consultations in Florida. The talks involved US envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s adviser Jared Kushner, senior Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov, and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov.
Key Aspects of the Peace Talks
During discussions, officials addressed various aspects of the peace plan, highlighting key points designed to secure a potential end to the three-and-a-half-year conflict. Zelenskyy is currently awaiting a “detailed in-person report” from Umerov and Hnatov.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Witkoff and Kushner met with Russian President Putin in Moscow to negotiate the plan. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the talks as “constructive, very useful, and informative,” signaling ongoing efforts to refine the proposal.
Challenges Ahead
The peace plan faces significant challenges, including differing expectations from the US, Ukraine, and Russia. Additionally, delays in reviewing the proposal may slow progress toward a viable resolution. Both nations appear committed to continued discussions despite current obstacles.
