WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by stating he would like to see Canada become the 51st state of the United States, underscoring his push to deepen bilateral relations.
Speaking at a joint press briefing with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump emphasized his determination to strengthen ties between the two countries. He described the U.S.-Canada border as “artificial” and pledged to expand trade and economic cooperation “at any cost.”
Touching on global trade dynamics, Trump said the U.S. would engage with China “at the right time,” while reaffirming his administration’s focus on protecting the American automobile industry. He further assured that no tariffs would be imposed on companies establishing manufacturing facilities within the United States.
Prime Minister Carney, in turn, praised Trump, crediting him with contributing to the restoration of global security.
